RFID Friday Lunch - August 2009

Topic: NFC – Mobile Payments in a Mobile Environment

Near Field Communication (NFC) enables intuitive, simple and safe communication between NFC-compatible devices when they are brought within four centimeters of one another. A simple wave or touch can establish an NFC connection, which is then compatible with other known wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth or WiFi. Is NFC the next iteration of RFID . . . or is it an evolutionary technology with completely different characteristics, applications, benefits and market potential? A NFC and mobile payments executive in North Texas will share where mobile contactless payments have been, what NFC has to offer the various stakeholders & end users, and the current obstacles to widespread acceptance and implementation.

Speakers:

Tom Zalewski is currently the president of Aikon Consulting and an expert in NFC, contactless, RFID and mobile payments applications. Recently Tom was CEO & GM of Venyon, Inc., a Nokia joint venture established to introduce Trusted Third Party services and applications for the emerging NFC market, with a primary focus on financial institutions, wireless operators, transit authorities and retailers. Previously Tom was Director for Nokia Ventures, and has held business development, sales, and product line management positions at wireless and telecommunications manufacturers such as Samsung Telecommunications, Siemens Wireless Terminals, Qualcomm and Sensormatic. Tom graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
